Three Shot, Two Killed, in Las Vegas Courthouse

A deputy U.S. Marshal and a court security officer were shot and injured during an exchange of gunfire with a gunman at the Lloyd D. George Federal Building in downtown Las Vegas Monday morning. The gunman was reportedly shot and killed.

Two federal agents were shot Monday when a gunman opened fire in the lobby of a federal building in downtown Las Vegas, and the gunman was shot and killed, the FBI said.

The shooting ended at about 8 AM local time. One of the two officers later died. It is unknown which of the two died of his wounds. The hospital indicated that the dead officer was 65 years old.

At this point, there is not word on the identity of the gunman, or the federal agents. Las Vegas police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said the gunman had been shot in the head.

It is currently believed that the incident unfolded as follows: the unidentified shooter walked into the lobby of the building at about 8 AM, pulled out the shotgun and shot the marshal and security officer. Another court security officer apparently shot back, killing the gunman.

A citizen uploaded a cell phone video to YouTube that reportedly has the audio of the incident. The man stated that he was at the Lloyd D. George Federal Building for a jury summons. It can be listened to here.

The courthouse contains 10 courtrooms, as well as offices for United States Marshals and the U.S. Attorney. It also has offices for Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign.

Sen. Reid released the following statement, saying, "My thoughts are with the [shooting victims] and their families."
