Consumers Drool For Nexus One For Verizon

Google introduced the HTC Nexus One yesterday. Currently it will work on GSM networks, although you can get it with a T-Mobile plan and get a subsidized price ($180 vs. $530). For those who love CDMA, the hunt for Nexus One for Verizon is on.

Some, in fact, think that Verizon is going to be a big winner in this. While the Nexus One for Verizon won't be available until the Spring of 2010, when ordering a Nexus One, when you continue through to the carrier selection process, if lists the Motorola Droid as an alternative for those who can't wait for the Verizon Nexus One.

The Nexus One for Verizon will be a CDMA device. The differing technology between the carrier networks is why the carriers are releasing at different times.

For those concerned that the Droid may not be as substantial an experience as the Nexus One for Verizon, while the Droid currently runs 2.0, and the Nexus One 2.1, the Droid will be getting an upgrade eventually. It was revealed in the Q&A at the Nexus One release that Motorola's Droid will get the 2.1 ROM as well.

In addition to a version of the Nexus One for Verizon, Google will ship a version for Vodafone in Europe later in the Spring also. It's unclear, but probable that just as with the T-Mobile version, the device is unlocked, but you are still "attached" to the carrier by a contract.

One problem with T-Mobile, and probably one of the driving factors for the desire for a Nexus One for Verizon, is the fact that the Nexus One (or Google Phone), if bought unlocked, will not have 3G on ATT. Those not satisfied with T-Mobile's coverage, and wanting a larger carrier, but with 3G, will have to wait for Verizon's version.
