Alabama Wins BCS Championship Game Over Texas

No. 1 Alabama has beaten No. 2 Texas for the BCS national championship. Though led by RBs Trent Richardson and Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, it was the Crimson Tide's defense that came up big in the end for a 37-21 victory that was much closer than the final score.

The Crimson Tide was gifted with the advantage of Texas QB Colt McCoy's injury, which took him out of the game. McCoy was knocked out of his last college game on Texas’ fifth offensive play, with a shoulder injury.

Despite Colt McCoy's injury, Texas made a game of it. Freshman QB Garrett Gilbert connected on two touchdown passes to Jordan Shipley. With slightly more than 3 minutes left in the game, Texas had the ball and trailed only 24-21.

To that point, Texas had not given up a sack. That is precisely what happened, as a sack on Gilbert resulted in a fumble that ended up with a fumble recovery by Courtney Upshaw at the Texas 3-yard line. From there Alabama took the ball in with a final 1-yard rush by Mark Ingram.

Trailing 31-21, Texas did not give up, but Gilbert threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted. From there, Alabama took the ball in on a Trent Richardson TD. The PAT failed, and Alabama had a 37-21 win.

For Alabama, Ingram had 116 yards on 22 carries in the game, with 2 TDs. Richardson carried the ball 19 times for 109 yards, and also had 2 TDs.

Alabama held a 24-6 lead at the half, but Garrett Gilbert seemingly calmed himself at the half. He led Texas on a comeback that made the game close.

This is the 13th national championship for Alabama, but their first since 1992. The win makes Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban the first coach to win BCS titles at two schools -- Alabama and LSU.
