Disney Marathon Weekend Continues

The Disney Marathon weekend is here, and it is indeed a weekend, as festivities began on January 7th and will continue through Sunday, January 10th, 2010. The Disney marathon weekend, held in Orlando, Florida, site of Disney World, features a half-marathon on Saturday, and the full marathon on Sunday.

However, the chilly weather hitting Florida, which is making citrus growers anxious, is also making dress more complex for the Disney marathon and half-marathon. Temperatures at the start of both the Half Marathon on Saturday and Marathon on Sunday are projected to be in the low 30s with highs reaching the low 50s each day.

The Disney marathon forecast means the typical spandex and shorts wear may not work so well. Participants are urged to dress in layers, which for premier runners who expect to win prizes is no problem: they will simply discard the extra layers, if they even bother with it. Any clothing discarded on the track will be donated to charity, the sponsors say.

Sunday's Disney marathon begins and ends at Epcot Center. More than 23,000 runners have registered for the event. The Disney marathon itself will begin at staggered times on Sunday, with 5:40, 5:50 and 6 AM staggered starts.

Frigid weather didn't seem to affect Disney Half-marathon runners, or at least, it did not deter them. The winners have already crossed the finish line at the time of this writing, and the top three are Chad Johnson, 33, 1:07:02, from MI, Sage Canady, 24, 1:07:20, and Luis Rivera, 36, 1:08:55, from Puerto Rico.

In addition to the Disney marathon and half-marathon events, there is also something called the Mickey Marathon Kid's Fest. There are, sort of races, for different age groups. There are:

  • 12 months and under – Diaper Dash for crawlers
  • 1-3 years old – 100m dash
  • 4-6 years old – 200m dash
  • 7-8 years old – 400m dash
  • Open to all children 13 years old & under – Mickey Mile (Friday, January 8 only)

Now that the half-marathon is over, the Disney Marathon weekend concludes tomorrow, in similarly frigid temperatures. So far, despite the cold, Disney Marathon weekend is as successful as always.
