Peyton Manning Named AP NFL MVP

The Associated Press has named Indianapolis Colt QB Peyton Manning this year's NFL MVP. With this latest NFL MVP Award, Peyton Manning becomes the first player to win 4 times.

It was basically a landslide NFL MVP decision. The voting, which was done by 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league, gave Peyton Manning 39 1/2 votes, while his closest rival, Drew Brees, QB of the New Orleans Saints, managed only 7 1/2 votes. The other two players who received votes were Philip Rivers of San Diego (2) and Brett Favre of Minnesota (1).

In fact, it was Brett Favre of Minnesota that Manning had been tied with, in terms of NFL MVP awards. Manning also won in 2003, 2004 and 2008. Even more, the 33-year-old quarterback has started every game in his career, 192 in the regular season and 15 in the playoffs, showing durability as well.

In winning the AP's NFL MVP award, Peyton Manning threw 393 completions out of 571 attempts, for a 68.8 completion percentage and 4500 yards. He had 33 TDs and 16 INTs, and finished with a 99.9 QB rating.

At the same time, Drew Brees had a much higher QB rating, although finishing far behind in the NFL MVP award. Some of this may be related to New Orleans' late season string of losses. He finished with 363 completions in 514 attempts, for 4388 yards, and a 70.6 completion percentage. He had 34 TDs, with only 11 INTs.

Peyton Manning managed the NFL MVP despite the loss of his longtime favorite receiver, Marvin Harrison. To make matters worse, he also lost Harrison's replacement, Anthony Gonzalez, who went down with a right knee injury in the opener.

Manning had to make due with what was left, and that turned out to be Reggie Wayne, who reached in the century mark in Manning's NFL MVP season: 100 catches for 1,264 yards and 10 TDs. So too, did TE Dallas Clark, who along with Tony Gonzalez ranked as the only tight ends with 100 receptions, with the same century mark as Wayne, along with 10 TDs.

In receiving his record-setting NFL MVP award, Peyton Manning released the following statement: "I'm very humbled and grateful to be honored with this award and I really feel like it is a reflection of our team. I've been the beneficiary of having the same owner, the same team president all four times. I've received great coaching from our head coaches and assistants and a number of different teammates who have all had a huge impact on me."
