Disney Marathon 2010 Held In Frigid Conditions

Following Saturday's half-marathon, Disney Marathon 2010 was held Sunday morning, in similarly frigid conditions. The 26.2 mile marathon closed out the Disney Marathon weekend.

Florida has been experiencing a major cold snap, but the runners in the Disney Marathon 2010 didn't let it "cool them off," at least not too much. Adriano Bastos, 31, from Brazil, won his sixth straight Disney Marathon, in the time of 2 hours, 22 minutes and 8 seconds ahead of an estimated 24,000 runners. No other men's runner has won the race more than twice since it began in 1994.

Meanwhile, second in the Disney Marathon 2010 were taken by fellow Brazilian Fredison Costa, 32, in 2:22:41. Third place was taken by Ocoee, FL's Jay Lumpkins, 24, in 2:24:24.

While runners still competed in the near-freezing cold, Bastos commented it frigid conditions. Speaking through an interpreter after Disney Marathon 2010, he said, "Never in my life have I run in this kind of cold. My muscles got really numb at the end."

In fact, while the weather was clear for Disney Marathon 2010 on Sunday, as opposed to Saturday's conditions, which were rainy as well as cold, the temperature was about 5 degrees lower at the start. To add to the chill, there were also harsh winds.

Bastos has a goal of 10 Disney marathon wins. While the Disney Marathon 2010 was his sixth consecutive, it was his 7th overall. Bastos adds another Disney-themed tattoo after each marathon win.

On the women's side of Disney Marathon 2010, the winner was Japan's Lisa Mizutani, 23. Her winning time was 2:51:20. She was well ahead of runner-up Christa Benton of St. Petersburg, FL (2:56:43) and third-place finisher Elena Linn of Atlanta, GA (2:58:43).

In the wheelchair division of Disney Marathon 2010, Krige Schabort of Cedartown, GA finished first with a time of 1:37:19. Among the women, Shirley Reilly of Tucson, AZ won the title at 2:09:51.
