Iran Nuclear Expert Killed By Bomb Blast

Iran has already begun blaming the West for the death on Tuesday of Masoud Ali Mohammadi, a professor at Tehran University, who was a nuclear physics professor. While a nuclear expert, he was also a public backer of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi in the contested June presidential election.

Prior to the election, pro-reform Web sites published his name among a list of 240 university teachers who supported opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. Mohammadi was killed Tuesday as he left his home, when a bomb-rigged motorcycle exploded outside his home. It was apparently remote-controlled.

Meanwhile, Iran state media blamed the killing on the West, specifically singling out, on one news Web site associated with a prominent member of the country's clerical leadership, the U.S. and Israel. The site said that the assassination was probably the work of an armed Iranian opposition group under the direction of Israeli agents.

Given Mousavi's support of the opposition, some have stated it would be more likely that Iran's government itself would be involved, but that of course, is purely conjecture. A U.S. official has alreayd rejected Iranian accusations that the United States had a role in the killing as "absurd."

The United States, and other Western countries, are currently engaged in opposition to Iran's nuclear enrichment program. Iran claims its program is solely focused on energy.

It is unclear if Mohammadi, described by news site Borna as a senior nuclear scientist, was involved in Iran's nuclear enrichment program. Records show that he received his doctorate in 1992 from the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran.

Some of his essays, posted online, show that Mohammadi was involved in quantum mechanics. He also specialized in elementary particle physics.
