As part of its plan to reduce waste by 33 percent by 2013, in three trial stores, Walmart now charges for bags. The stores now either require customers bring their own bags, or pay for reusable ones.
It's not all that bad, as with this new program, the bags can be used over and over again. Walmart charges 15 or 50 cents for the bags, depending on their size. The bags are made of polyester.
The trial is being run at two stores in Sacramento and one in Ukiah. However, soon the Walmart charge for bags will extend to 52 more stores in Northern California. That will take place on Friday.
The mega-firm added that customer reaction in Sacramento and Ukiah to the news that Walmart charges for bags will determine whether other stores continue to have free plastic bags. The 15 cent bags are reusable, but not too sturdy, compared to the 50 cent ones. The bags are supposedly washable, and according to Walmart, even the cheaper ones can be used up to 75 times.
Amelia Neufeld, media manager for Walmart, said the following about Walmart's green efforts, not necessarily related to the news that Walmart charges for bags:
"We welcome people bringing in any bags, boxes, whatever works for them. Our goal is to generate zero net waste. We would like to reduce one third of the amount of plastic we are using at home and at our stores by 2013.
"Walmart is committed to addressing global warming and reducing the energy demand footprint of its operations with a few simple environmental goals. We would like to create zero waste and sell products that sustain the environment."
