With MTV Help, George Clooney Organizes Haiti Telethon

Actor George Clooney will host a telethon to raise money for Haiti disaster relief, The Hollywood Reporter stated today. The telethon would be aired on MTV, but not just MTV itself: rather, all MTV-branded channels would participate.

Roger Friedman said that George Clooney gave him the news, privately, in a face-to-face conversation, Thursday night. Friedman said he was attending a private reception for Clooney's movie “Up in the Air” at the Monkey Bar. The show is slated for January 22nd, and all the MTV channels, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and CMT, as well as on ABC, NBC, HBO and CNN.

According to the report, Sting and his wife Trudie Styler have already signed up for the Clooney telethon, after bumping into Clooney last night, at the same gig. Quite naturally, George Clooney is going to make some calls to friends and get celebrities from coast to coast to join in.

Possibly at the top of his list should Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. While not that well-known for their singing and dancing, they were among the first to pledge to help Haiti, and they are also always to be counted on for any humanitarian efforts.

Haiti suffered through a 7.0 earthquake earlier this week, as well as multiple aftershocks. Much of their infrastructure has been reduced to rubble. Aid is trickling in, but slowly, as the damage to the area makes getting in to help difficult.
