Haiti, still devastated by earthquakes and aftershocks, will be receiving still more help. Simon Cowell, he of American Idol fame, will be producing a Haiti relief single, with donations to go to the still recovering country.
Simon Cowell is just the latest in a line of celebrities to offer help to Haiti. For example, George Clooney is organizing a telethon, and many commented on Haiti during the Golden Globe's telecast.
This is despite the somewhat hateful comments made by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who urged listeners to not donate to Haiti relief. “We’ve already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.” Limbaugh also accused the White House of politicizing the disaster.
At the same time, former President George W. Bush, commenting on the Limbaugh comment, said the following on "Meet the Press" this past Sunday: "I don't know if -- what they're talking about. I've been briefed by the President about the response. And as I said in my opening comment, I appreciate the president's quick response to this disaster." Bush and former president Bill Clinton have both been chosen to help coordinate the aid efforts.
American Idol and X-Factor judge Simon Cowell told the Associated Press that he was asked by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to help in Haiti relief. Cowell will be producing a single within the next 10 days; all the proceeds will go to the Haiti earthquake relief.
Simon Cowell added that he would have the single ready within 7 - 10 days, although he did not know "who was available," meaning who was available to participate. The move is somewhat reminscent of the "We Are the World" charity single from 1985.
"We Are the World" was a benefit single for African famine relief. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and co-produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the identically titled album "We Are the World." The song was released on March 7, 1985, as the only single from the album, and became the first single "certified" multi-platinum.
