The Jets Colts score was a final of 30-17, but in reality the game was far closer than that. The Jets defense, ranked number one in the NFL and allowing a league-low 236 points managed to hold off the explosive Colts for quite some time, but finally succumbed to Peyton Manning, and receiving tandem Pierre Garcon and Auston Collie of the Colts.
In fact, the opening series of the game showed that the Jets defense would live up to its NFL number one ranking. They sacked Peyton Manning on the 3rd and 8 after an initial first down by the Colts. That sack was a thing of beauty, as well.
Additionally, the Jets Colts score with only slightly more than 2 minutes left in the first half was a seemingly surprising 17-6, Jets. It was then that Peyton Manning took the Colts down the field, 80 yards for a TD, in a drive that took 4 plays, all of them passes. In fact, one was incomplete, and the other three were to Austin Collie of the Colts, who caught a 16 yard TD pass, which led to the Colts going into the locker room trailing 17-13 at the half. He finished the game with 7 catches for 7 catches for 123 yards.
Meanwhile, Pierre Garcon caught 11 passes for 151 yards, and the TD catch that gave the Colts the lead 20-17, in the third quarter. In the third quarter, Dallas Clark caught a 15 Yd TD Pass From Peyton Manning, and a Matt Stover FG with only two minutes left finished the scoring.
At the same time, the Colts rushing attack, led by Joseph Addai at 16 rushes for 80 yards, managed over 100 yards, 101 to be precise, against the stingy Jets Defense. Manning, reportedly trying to be the first QB to win the MVP in the regular season, and then win the Super Bowl that year since Kurt Warner in 1999, was 26/39 for 377 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTS, and 123.6 QB rating.
Manning also broke a record with his seventh 300-yard postseason games. He had been tied with Kurt Warner and Joe Montana at six.
For New York, rookie QB Mark Sanchez showed more poise than nervousness. He finished 17/30, 257 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT, but that was in the closing seconds. He had a 93.3 QB rating.
Down 3-0 to the Colts with the second quarter just starting, a deep pass from Sanchez to Braylon Edwards set the Colts back on their heels. It was an 80 yard TD and put the Jets ahead 7-3.
However, at half, the Colts made several adjustments, and didn't allow the Jets to score in the second half. The Colts now await the winner of the Saints - Vikings game.
