The results of the previously announced Kurt Warner Press Conference are in, and for Arizona Cardinals fans, the results are not good. The all-time great QB has decided to hang it up, and retire.
It had been expected that the Kurt Warner press conference would not hold good news. He had been gathering his family so they could attend the news conference, which was held at the Cardinals' training facility.
Although 38, Kurt Warner only played 12 years in the NFL, having to work his way out of obscurity into the NFL. He also had to have some luck, including some bad luck on the part of another.
Kurt Warner played three seasons in the Arena Football League and one in NFL Europe. Then, in 1998, Warner made the Rams as a backup, but became the starter when Trent Green was injured.
In an amazing season, Kurt Warner led the St. Louis Rams to a 13-3 record in the regular season. They then went to the Super Bowl, and triumphed over Tennessee. Kurt Warner was named the league and Super Bowl MVP.
Through 2001, when St. Louis returned to the Super Bowl, only to lose to New England, Kurt Warner was at the top of his game. He won a second NFL MVP award that season.
Then things turned down for Kurt Warner. He suffered through an injury plagued 2002 season, and then suffered a concussion in the 2003 season opening loss to the NY Giants, after which he never started for the Rams again.
After signing a free agent contract with the Giants for 2004, Kurt Warner was replaced by rookie Eli Manning after nine games. He then came to the Arizona Cardinals in 2005. He eventually replaced the injured Matt Leinart part way through the 2007 season.
In 2008, he led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl, after beating out Leinart in the spring. There they narrowly lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This season, he led the Cardinals to the NFC West title, then led Arizona to a wild 51-45 wild-card win over Green Bay. Then, however, he suffered a huge hit in the Saints game, which Arizona lost.
Kurt Warner finished his career with 2666 completions in 4070 attempts, for 32344 and a 65.5 completion percentage. He had 208 TDs and 128 INTs, and finished with a 93.7 QB rating. He and Fran Tarkenton are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 100 touchdowns and 14,000 yards for two different teams.
At the Kurt Warner press conference, the QB said:
"Obviously, it's been 12 unbelievable years, some of the best years of my life, but I want everybody to know that I'm just as excited about the next 12, that I'm excited about what lies in front of me. I'm excited about spending more time with my family, and seeing what God's going to do next."
