Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 is National Signing Day 2010. That's the first day that high school athletes can sign letters of intent for colleges of their choice. Until now, they could give verbal commitments, but they could always change.
In fact, as National Signing Day 2010 began, there was a switch early in the day. ESPN has reported that Sean Tapley (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines), a four-star WR who has been committed to South Carolina since his junior year, will sign with North Carolina.
A couple of high profile players made commitments in the recent days, prior to National Signing Day 2010. They both opted for Texas' defense, with LB Jordan Hicks and DE Jackson Jeffcoat verbally committing.
National Signing Day has become a bigger event for fans since the advent of being able to watch and get updates at work via the Web. In fact, ESPN is both streaming and liveblogging.
Any coaching changes have an effect on the state of commitments. For example, though not yet having an effect, Pete Carroll's move to the NFL and Lane Kiffin moving from Tennessee to USC to replace him could have an impact on any commitments that were made in the past.
Also, while there are plenty of players who have committed verbally already, there are still highly ranked players who have not. ESPN has a video story covering that. There will also be switches, as noted above.
National Signing Day always falls on the first Wednesday of February. Typically the most highly rated players commit within a month of National Signing Day.
