National Signing Day Switches Run Rampant

As we noted earlier, on National Signing Day, anything can happen. A number of highly ranked athletes are switching their commitments on the first day that they can sign letters of intent.

The current list includes five-star safety Keenan Allen. He had verbally committed to Alabama in November. This morning, he said that he will attend UC Berkeley. Keenan Allen had reportedly, as of last week, been wavering in his decision.

High touted QB Brion Carnes from Manatee High School in Bradenton, FL made a last-second switch Wednesday morning. He opted out of Western Kentucky and when he committed to Nebraska.

Defensive lineman J.C. Copeland has signed with LSU. He opted out of Tennessee, which may be a result of Lane Kiffin bolting to USC.

Miami Central High School RB Brandon Gainer switched to Kentucky. He had been originally slated to sign with University of Central Florida (UCF).

Meanwhile, Handley High's Ladarious Phillips out of Roanoke, Alabama was an uncommitted player. A two-way player who can play DT and RB, he signed with Auburn.

Another uncommitted receiver, Ivan McCartney, has signed a letter of intent with the West Virginia Mountaineers. He had also been mulling over Miami and Oregon. McCartney is 6-foot-1, 162 pounds, and is ranked the No. 18 receiver in his class according to ESPN.

Tennessee, which lost J.C. Copeland (above), managed to get their own switch to their campus. Wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers, who was pledged to Georgia is now a Volunteer.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish signed Matt James, a 6-foot-8, 290-pound offensive lineman ranked as a top 100 national prospect by Rivals.com.

Outside LB Darrin Kitchens from Homestead, FL signed with the Florida Gators. He's a little light, at 196 pounds, and 6-foot-2.

One highly touted offensive lineman, ranked #1 by many, Seantrel Henderson (from Saint Paul, Minnesota) will make his announcement at 5:30 PM EST. ESPN believes that he will select the USC Trojan (and Lane Kiffin) over his other short-listed college: Ohio State.

There is obviously way more to come.
