The Herald-Sun, an Australian website, said today that Tiger Woods, currently believed ensconced at a sex rehab clinic, could return to pro golf in as little as two weeks. The site cited no sources.
A return by Tiger Woods to the PGA would be welcomed by golf, but perhaps not by fans. It is unclear what fan reaction would be to his return, after the scandal which erupted in his private life over numerous affairs and seeming sex addiction.
His return would be at the World Golf Championship, and the Dove Mountain course where he made his successful return after knee surgery, last year. Woods has won that tournament three times, in 2003, 2004 and 2008.
That tournament is match play, in which a player or team earns a point for each hole in which they have beaten their opponents. "Normal" tournaments use stroke play, in which the total number of strokes is counted over rounds of 18 holes during the course of the tournament.
In a related, yet unrelated story, eight time major winner Tom Watson said that Woods needed to show "humility" when he returns, whether in two weeks or later. He said:
"He messed up. He knows he messed up. The world knows he messed up. And he has to take ownership of that.
"One of the things that is not in question is what Tiger has to do, he has to take ownership of what he has done. He must get his personal life in order.
"And when he comes back, he has to show some humility to the public in the sense that, if I were him, it wouldn't be at a golf tournament where I would first come out.
"I would come out and do an interview and say 'I screwed up' and admit it. And (say), 'I'm going to change, I want my wife and family back, I have to earn her trust back'."
