Avatar, which had already taken the global box office crown from Titanic, is now the king (of the world!) in domestic receipts as well. On Wednesday, Fox announced the movie had surpassed Titanic's earnings.
On Tuesday, Avatar reached $601.1 million domestically on Tuesday, putting it just ahead of the $600.8 million take for Titanic. Of course, James Cameron still owns the top two movies of all time, as Titanic was his movie as well.
Cameron's producing partner Jon Landau said he, Cameron and their collaborators have discussed sequel prospects. Nothing definite has been decided, but fans are clamoring for a sequel. For any who have watched the film, the ending of the film set up a sequel perfectly, also.
Just prior to the release of the film in December, Cameron, writer-director of the movie, said he had the “broad strokes for two more films.”
Many point out the fact that Avatar has the advantage of inflationary ticket prices, as well as higher prices for both 3D and IMAX versions. In fact, even Gone With The Wind sold more absolute tickets than Avatar. However, Landau pointed something else out: competition.
“‘Gone With the Wind’ didn’t have to compete with television. ‘Star Wars’ didn’t have to compete with DVDs. ‘Titanic’ didn’t have to compete with Blu-rays and satellite. So I think every film has to compete on its own merits.
“The inflation argument, I find it funny when people raise it, ’cause I never heard them raising it when they talk about budget and cost to the movie. But they love to do it when it comes to box office.”
