It's hard enough to keep track of the Toyota recall models and years without a new one being added. However, the Nikkei News Service in Japan is reporting that Toyota is planning to recall 270,000 2010 Priuses over braking issues.
Concerns of the braking problems were raised on Wednesday. However, as far as the U.S. National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) goes, the investigation has only begun. On Thursday, they indicated they were looking into the reports of braking issues.
On Wednesday, reports had surfaced that as many as 100 reports of braking issues had been sent to the NHTSA. Two of the reports involved accidents.
Braking on a hybrid is typically more complex than on a normal vehicle. The reason is that a hybrid uses regenerative braking, meaning the energy from the braking is converted and used to charge the hybrid's batteries.
Earlier on Thursday, Toyota acknowledged there were design problems with the brakes in the 2010 version of its popular gas-electric hybrid, but said it was still deciding whether a recall is needed. Toyota said it has already corrected problems with the antilock brake system in Prius models sold since late last month.
The Prius was not involved in the recent Toyota recall over sticking accelerator pedals. Earlier models of the Prius were recalled over floor mats that could interfere with the gas pedal, however.
