Haiti Aid Helicopter Crashes, Killing Two

An aid helicopter returning from a Haitian recovery mission on Thursday night slammed into a mountain in the Dominican Republic, authorities reported on Friday. Two Americans were killed in the crash.

The crash was reported by the Dominican Republic's National Institute of Civil Aviation. The two Americans were identified as James Jaloe and John Ward.

No details on the U.S.-registered helicopter's cargo or mission were given. It was noted that the chopper hit Restauración, close to the Haitian border, some 175 miles northeast of the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo. It then burst into flames.

Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12th. Since then, countries around the world have pitched in to help the country, which was devastated by the temblor. As many as 200,000 are estimated to be dead as a result of the quake.

Meanwhile, many more are homeless. Authorities are reportedly considering the implications of rebuilding the capital of Port-au-Prince on the same site. A quake of 7.6 magnitude has been forecast to occur within the next 20 years.
