OPM Calls A Federal Snow Day in D.C.

The blizzard which has blanketed the mid-Atlantic region of the country and turned Washington D.C. into a winter wonderland has caused a federal snow day. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM, at http://www.opm.gov) has called for federal offices to be closed on Monday.

As a result, it looks like non-believers, thinking the news is a rumor, are hammering the OPM's website at http://www.opm.gov. The site is currently inaccessible (at the time of this writing).

OPM Director John Berry decides when to close federal offices in the Washington DC area. After a Sunday afternoon conference call with state and local government and transportation officials, it was determined a Monday morning commute would be too unsafe. Thus, the OPM (http://www.opm.gov) has decided to close federal offices.

Emergency personnel must still report as necessary. However, following the OPM's status report, private offices will likely be closed on Monday as well, as the federal government's operating status is usually used as a guide. Nearly all academic institutions in the region will also close on Monday.

With the federal government closed, it is hoped the area will thaw out. Closing the federal government for one day costs U.S. taxpayers roughly $100 million in lost productivity. That's something that the OPM (http://www.opm.gov) worries about when closing federal offices.
