After seven weeks at the top, and after setting records in both domestic and worldwide box office revenue, "Avatar" has seen itself dethroned. This week, the new movie "Dear John" took the prize as number one in box office revenue.
Sony's "Dear John" is a long-distance love story between a soldier (Channing Tatum) and his sweetheart (Amanda Seyfried) back home. It set a record for Super Bowl weekend, with it's $32.4 million topping the $31.1 million debut for "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" in 2008.
"Avatar" slipped to No. 2 with $23.6 million. Its record domestic total is now $630.1 million. "Avatar" also continued its record-setting global take, with a record $2.2 billion worldwide. Of course, with inflated ticket prices taken into account, "Avatar" has sold less tickets than the prior record-holder, James Cameron's other mega-hit "Titanic."
20th Century Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston said, "It had to happen sometime. There's nothing that could disappoint me with this movie."
Meanwhile, Sony didn't gloat much, realizing that the staying power of "Avatar" will probably not be matched by "Dear John." While acknowledging his own film's feat, Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony said of "Avatar," "I think they're going to be fine in the long run."
"From Paris With Love," the other new wide release this weekend, opened at No. 3 with $8.1 million. The movie stars John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as CIA operatives.
