Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's doctor, has finally been charged in the death of the pop superstar. Jackson's death last year was one of the highest profile in a long while, and the charge of involuntary manslaughter sets the L.A. area up for a celebrity trial that could rival O.J. Simpson's.
Conrad Murray is a cardiologist who was with Jackson when he died June 25 at his rented Los Angeles mansion. He has been accused of acting “unlawfully and without malice” in Jackson’s death, according to the complaint.
Murray and his lawyers wanted Murray to turn himself in last Friday, but prosecutors noted they would not file today. Thus, the scenario we reached was put into motion.
Michael Jackson, 50, hired Dr. Conrad Murray to be his personal physician as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts in London. Authorities say Jackson died after the doctor administered the powerful general anesthetic propofol and two other sedatives so that Jackson, a chronic insomniac, could sleep.
Conrad Murray turned himself in shortly before 1 PM local time at a branch courthouse near Los Angeles International Airport. If convicted, Murray could face a maximum four-year prison sentence.
