Daniel Kerrigan's Death Ruled a Homicide

The death of Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan's father Daniel, 70, has been ruled a homicide. He was found dead in his Massachusetts home on Sunday, Jan. 24th.

A Massachusetts medical examiner has determined that Daniel Kerrigan died of heart arrhythmia after suffering a neck injury. The injury was so severe that it damaged his larynx.

Daniel Kerrigan died after what authorities said was a struggle with his 45-year-old son, Mark Kerrigan, Nancy's brother. These new findings could prompt new charges against him. He has already been charged with assault in the case, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

The report was released by Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone. In a press release, he said "As a result of these conclusions of the medical examiner, the investigation into Daniel Kerrigan's death, and whether any charges in connection with his death are appropriate, remains ongoing."

At the same time, the Kerrigan family seems firmly behind Mark Kerrigan. In a statement released through their attorney, the family expressed disappointment "that the medical examiner would release a cause of death without having all of the relevant facts. We believe this finding to be premature and inaccurate. The Kerrigan family does not blame anyone for the unfortunate death of Dan Kerrigan, who had a pre-existing heart condition.

Nancy Kerrigan (above) was an Olympic-class figure skater who won bronze at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France in 1992, and silver at Lillehammer, Norway in 1994. She is possibly best remembered for something she didn't do: she was injured in an attack before the 1994 Winter Games by skating rival Tonya Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard, Shawn Eckardt.
