Forecasters predict another foot of snow heading for Washington D.C., Philadelphia and New York. With that, the federal government is to remain closed through Wednesday.
If you look at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website, you'll see the message "Federal agencies in the Washington, DC, area are CLOSED." That message that the Federal Government will be closed applies to Wednesday, and was posted at 6:50 PM EST on Tuesday.
Snow is keeping approximately 230,000 federal government employees home, and it has since last Friday. All told, the government will have been closed for four days after the federal government closes Wednesday.
In fact, there's no guarantee that the federal government will re-open after the Wednesday closure. However, despite the fact that essentially the federal government is closed, work goes on.
Many essential government services are performed at offices elsewhere in the country. In fact, about 85 percent of federal employees work outside the Washington D.C. region. Others were working from home despite the snow, as requested on the OPM website.
Meanwhile, besides the federal government, many other offices are closed. New York City announced schools would have a snow day Wednesday. That is only the third one in the last six years.
Philadelphia's airport saw most flights canceledafter 8 PM Tuesday. Washington D.C.'s airports expected flights to stop around 5 PM.
Gov. Joe Manchin urged West Virginia's to clear snow from the roofs of public buildings. This warning was made to avoid a similar disaster as in 1998, when roof collapses were blamed for at least three deaths.
