Canada had expected its first gold medal in the women's moguls, but it was not to be, despite the presence of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Instead, the first gold for the host country came in men's moguls, to Alexandre Bilodeau.
Canada ran a program called "Own the Podium," throwing $110 million into it, in hopes of winning the medal count "race" in the 2010 Vancouver Games. Canada's first gold brings the medal count up to three, but that is still only half of what the leader, the United States, has won.
Meanwhile, Bilodeau ran the course in 23.17 seconds and posted a score of 26.75. That was .17 points better than defending champion Dale Begg-Smith, a Vancouver native who now competes for Australia.Bronze went to the United States' Bryon Wilson.
Not only is this the first gold in these games for Canada, it is the first gold ever for Canada won within its borders. The previous Canadian Olympics were in 1976 in Montreal and 1988 in Calgary.
