Sam Bradford First Overall Pick in NFL Draft 2010

The St. Louis Rams, with a 6-42 record over the last three seasons, picked Sam Bradford, QB, as the first overall pick of the NFL Draft 2010. As a QB out of a spread offense, they have effectively made the same sort of pick as the 49ers did in 2005, when they picked Alex Smith overall. They never learn, do they?

Spread quarterbacks, or quarterbacks in gimmicky offenses (e.g., Tim Tebow) have a history of being risky picks. There is a lot unknown about Sam Bradford. He was out most of the 2009 season with an injury. However, he did win the 2008 Heisman Trophy award as a sophomore.

At the same time, Hall of Fame QB Steve Young, speaking on ESPN during the NFL Draft 2010 coverage, said that he was unsure if Sam Bradford had the take-charge attitude that a star QB needs. It's that sort of attitude that Joe Montana, Steve Young, Peyton Manning have ... you get the drift. Based on reports, Tim Tebow shares that mentality.

The Rams, however, were desperate for a QB. Sam Bradford was the best QB available at Number One. Will he pan out? It's a gamble, and will be seen later.
