French-Canadian singer Celine Dion is pregnant at the age of 42 with twins, her assistant said. It's been no secret that the singer and her husband, Rene Angelil, 68, have been wanting to expand their family for a long time.
Celion Dion is nearly four months pregnant and due in late October or early November, according to her assistant Anna DeMartino. The news follows several unsuccessful pregnancies. Despite the impending birth, Celine Dion will reportedly continue with her March 15 return to Caesars Palace for a three-year residency, a sequel to her "A New Day: Live in Las Vegas" 2003-2007 stint there.
Dion and her husband have a 9 year old boy, Rene Charles, born via in vitro fertilization. The anticipated twins were also conceived by that method. Earlier, in August 2009 it was spokesperson announced that she was pregnant with her second child,[ adding that she was due in May 2010. However, in November 2009, it was announced that her pregnancy had failed.
Acupuncture Before Being Pregnant
Celine Dion underwent acupuncture treatments six weeks before her most recent in vitro procedure, reportedly her sixth, and will continue the treatments for the rest of her pregnancy. While unclear why acupuncture would help with a pregnancy, some consider the Chinese procedure, involving pricks with needles, to be a cure-all.
A recent study by Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, co-director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, showed that acupuncture is not simply a placebo. The study showed that acupuncture may help relieve pain by triggering a natural painkilling chemical called adenosine. At the same time, the researchers added that they believe they can enhance the ancient treatment's effectiveness by coupling the process with deoxycoformycin, a well-known cancer drug, which also maintains adenosine levels longer than usual.
Rene Angelil told People magazine that “We're ecstatic. Celine is just hoping for a healthy pregnancy. She was hoping for one baby and the news that we are having two is a double blessing."
Angelil was first Dion's manager. However, eventually Dion revealed her feelings for him by declaring him "the colour of [her] love" in the dedication section of her third Anglophone album 'The Colour of My Love.' Angélil and Dion married in an extravagant wedding ceremony in December 1994, which was broadcast live on Canadian television.
