Paul Babeu, oh, Paul Babeu: another case in point showing the hypocrisy of the Republican party: not only do they call themselves God's Own Party, the Party of God, as though there are no Christians or religious folk on the Left, but they also harangue gay people, yet so many of them are closeted and eventually are forced out.
On Saturday, Paul Babeu, an Pinal County Arizona sheriff running for Congress as a Republican denied accusations that he had threatened to deport an alleged ex-lover, a Mexican national. However, he also acknowledged he was gay, thus most likely ending his career as a Republican candidate for anything.
Although there are gay Republicans, the Log Cabin Republicans for example, one wouldn't expect one who is not closeted to succeed in a run for national office.
Additionally, Paul Babeu resigned from a volunteer position with Mitt Romney's Arizona campaign. He also acknowledged that he had a "personal relationship" with a man identified only as Jose. The press conference came about after a report published Thursday by the weekly Phoenix New Times.
At the news conference Saturday, Babeu, 43, called the allegations "absolutely, completely false, except for the issues that refer to me as being gay. Because that's the truth. I am gay." He is ... or perhaps was ... considered an rising star in the Republican Party. He is known for his hard-line stance against illegal immigration. He told reporters he did not break any laws, casting the allegations as attempts to derail his Congressional campaign.
One might go so far as to say that Babeu just derailed his own campaign for Congress, at least as a Republican, by coming out as gay.
It's the latest example of a Republican being exposed as being gay. Other examples include Mark Foley whose homosexualtiy, according to Wikipedia, was an "open secret," and Larry Craig, who has not come out as gay as was not cited as being gay in Wikipedia, but was among the Republican cited as being hypocritical in the film "Outrage," which discussed closeted politicians who promote anti-gay legislation.
It's also interesting how God's Own Party or as progressive radio host Norman Goldman likes to call them, the RepubliCONs call themselves Christians, yet they applaud when asked if they would allow someone to die if he had chosen not to pay for his own health insurance and his life was threatened by illness. Indeed, that is precisely how Christ would act, is it not? [We assume the sarcasm is quite evident].
These are the same Christians who stammer when asked who Christ would choose to insure (the answer, quite obviously, to anyone who read the Bible, is everyone). Christ was always concerned about the poor.
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least among you, you did not do for me.'" -Matthew 25:41-45
Babeu has vowed to continue his campaign for Arizona's rural western 4th Congressional District seat; he is running against fellow Republican Paul Gosar.
