Audi's 2012 Super Bowl ad is a bloody good time

Audi

German automaker Audi has released its Super Bowl ad early, ahead of the Feb. 5th mega-sports event, and it's a bloody good time.

Audi plans to air the just released 60-second commercial during the big game in one of the premier ad blocks of the game: the first commercial block of time after the opening kick-off.

The ad begins with a set of young, good-looking people around a campfire in the dark of night. They're revealed as being inhuman when two of them leap onto a tree and start shimmying up it an an incredible pace.

Next we see a good-looking man cruising up the highway in an Audi S7. No, he's not human either, as viewers can tell when he reveals his fangs.

Cut back to the campfire, and more fanged folks. While unclear what are in the cups, they ARE drinking something out of blood red plastic beer cups.

Then, the ad cuts back to the Audi S7, which we now see has something very important for the party. It's a cooler full of Type O positive blood. No, no "True Blood" here; this isn't that HBO series with its artificial substitute for human blood.

The "hero" then drives up in the Audi S7, with the folks at the campfire waiting. Why, then, do they suddenly have their eyes go red and hiss at the approaching car?

It's because those dang S7s have LED headlights. Those headlamps are a bit too bright for the vampires who start turning into dust as the light plays over them.

The late-comer doesn't notice as the rest of the party turns into dust. After all, he's busy getting the cooler full of blood out of the car. He eventually notices.

At that point, the ad shows "Daylight, now in a headlight. Audi LED headlights." It also shows the Twitter hashtag "SoLongVampires."

It gets its point across, and is humorous, to boot, but come on. How about promoting the car's 420-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 instead of the LED headlights? Or any of a number of performance facing features?

Perhaps Audi marketing isn't too bright.

At any rate, watch the video below.
