Foster Friess, who is a millionaire Wyoming backer of Rick Santorum's through a super PAC, caused backlash for the candidate when he chimed into the contraception debate by making a crude "joke" about women and contraception, has apologized over the remark, which was so stunning it took MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell aback.
Andre Mitchell asked Friess the following:
"Do you have any concerns about some of your guy's comments on contraception, women in combat, whether that would hurt his general election campaign, would he be the nominee?"
Here's what Foster Friess said:
"Well, I get such a chuckle when these things come up. Here we have millions of our fellow Americans unemployed, we have jihadists camps being set up in Central, uh, Latin America which Rick has been warning about, and people seem to be so preoccupied with sex that I think it says something about our culture. We maybe need a massive therapy session so we can concentrate on what the real issues are.
"This contraceptive thing, my gosh it's such inexpensive. Back in my day, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptions. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.”
It may not have been costly, but the reaction by Andrea Mitchell can only be described one way: priceless. While Foster Friess is sitting there with a big grin on his face, Mitchell stammers and said, "Excuse me, I'm just trying to catch my breath from that, Mr. Friess, frankly," as Friess chuckled at his own "joke." She moved along quickly.
On Friday, it was reported that Friess took to his blog at FosterFriess.com to apologize. However, that page no longer exists. Not just that one page, either. It's unclear if the site was taken down by a hacker group like Anonymous, or what.
On Friday's "This Morning" on CBS, Santorum himself said that the Friess comments were “a bad joke” and that he (Santorum) should not have to deal with backlash over it. However, Ellen Miller, executive director of the Sunlight Foundation watchdog group. noted that Santorum IS talking about it, and for a reason: “The fact that Santorum is spending so much time discussing what his super PAC contributor said suggests he understands very well how important the group is to his campaign. He has to talk about it.”
