Chevrolet has selected the winner of its Route 66 ad contest, which it launched last last September, and the winner is a 26-year-old aspiring filmmaker from Long Island, N.Y.
The GM division received 198 films, which they narrowed to 33 finalists in December. The winner of the contest is Zach Borst of Florham Park, N.Y.. Borst used his hometown as the backdrop for 30- and 60-second videos. His winning film, embedded below, shows a new high school graduate who thinks mistakenly his parents gave him a new Chevrolet Camaro as his graduation gift, only to see a neighbor drive it off in it.
His prize, in addition to exposure, is $25,000 from Chevrolet. The company will use his film as one of the the four 30-second commercials General Motors has bought in the Feb. 5 Super Bowl. Chevrolet has not yet decided if Borst's ad will be aired subsequent times after the Super Bowl. Andrew Dinsdale, Chevrolet's assistant director for digital marketing said "This was a great way to get ads that were about real people and real situations."
Borst said, "My Dad was a cop and worked real hard to be able to buy his kids their first cars. They were used, but mine meant the world to me. Then I wondered what it would look like if I got a brand new Camaro? I mean, after all, who wouldn't want a Camaro as a graduation gift?" His ad was titled, "Happy Grad."
In a press release, General Motors Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick said, "We asked filmmakers to depict life's journey and how is there along the way. When I saw Zach's spot, I had to laugh, because the situation is something many families can related to - expectation and reality. 'Happy Grad' clearly shows the passion that Chevrolet elicits."
