It is a day that probably is a bad day to launch a product (Dell, you were warned about the Dell Streak), or open a business, or do anything important, at least if you are superstitious or have OCD. It is Friday the 13th, and today superstitions run rampant.
Friday the 13th superstitions many and well-known
Aside from being a well-known series of horror flicks, Friday the 13th brings thoughts of black cats, ladders, broken mirrors, and more to mind. Yes, of course, we know that the Dell Streak mini-tablet is being launched on AT&T today, which is probably a bad move for Dell, but perhaps they can reverse the bad luck.
For those interested, triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13. Meanwhile, friggatriskaidekaphobia is actual fear of Friday the 13th itself. Realistically, bad luck is supposed to come on Friday the 13th, but superstitious actions are not relegated to that day only. In fact, they are supposed be bad luck any day.
Still, what are the major superstitions that run through the minds of folks on this Friday?
1) Black cat - perhaps the most famous superstition, on Friday the 13th especially you probably don't want a black cat to cross your path. However, this superstition varies, and in fact, in Great Britain and Japan having a black cat cross your path is considered good luck. In the US or several European countries, it is bad luck to have a black cat walk by.
Further detail is that if a black cat walks toward you, it brings you good luck. If a black cat walks away from you, it takes your good luck, thus giving you bad luck.
2) Mirror - If a mirror falls from a wall it means someone is going to die. If you break a mirror you have seven years of bad luck. However, if you break a mirror, according to Roman lore, you can escape the seven years if you bury the broken mirror pieces.
3) Stepping on certain things, when walking on a sitewalk. The most well-known of these superstitions is that if you step on a crack, you will break your mother's back. But there are others:
“Step on a nail, put your father in jail," “Step in a hole, you’ll break your mother’s sugar bowl,” “Step on a line, you break your mother’s spine,” “Step in a ditch, your mother’s nose will itch."
4) Ladders - it is considered bad luck to walk under a ladder. This could, in fact, have some basis in reality, since it could collapse or something dropped on you.
5) Spilling Salt - considered bad luck. To remove the bad luck, you throw the salt over your should. Supposedlyk, this prevents bad spirits from following you.
6) Umbrellas - opening an umbrella indoors is considered bad luck. Once again there could be some truth to this, as you could see opening a large umbrella as being dangerous indoors. Opening of Umbrellas Indoors.
