If it's Sept. 20, 2013, it must be iPhone 5C / 5S release day, and with that, Squaretrade, third party protection plan vendor, has begun a promotion that gives consumers a price cut of $30 on a two year protection plan.

A normal two-year protection plan -- which protects other electronics in addition to iPhones -- is $124. With the coupon code 1P37D6DT00V, that cost is lowered by $30, to $94.99. These figures are for the 16GB model, and are for both the iPhone 5S and 5C.

We won't bother to point out that the iPhone 5C is significantly cheaper than the iPhone 5S, yet has the same cost for a protection plan (ahem). On the other hand, the much, much cheaper iPhone 4 also costs $124 for a two-year protection plan.

Squaretrade's smartphone protection plans are generally much more liberal than plans offered by the carriers or Apple itself. For example, the plans will cover accidents including complete immersion in water or even running over the device.

It also covers Apple Genius Bar visits. Squaretrade customers can take their iPhones to their local Genius Bar and Squaretrade will cover the cost. If a user prefers, Squaretrade will sent them a replacement iPhone overnight.

Don't think that one Squaretrade plan equals one usee of your protection, either. A normal two-year protection plan -- which protects other electronics in addition to iPhones -- is $124. The plan even covers multiple consumer mistakes. One SquareTrade plan covers up to four repairs or replacements.
