Marc Anthony has filed for divorce from Jennifer Lopez in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, and the cause for the split is cited as the seemingly ubiquitous irreconcilable differences.
It is sad that the differences between the pair were irreconcilable, as they seemed to have so much in common: they both shared a Puerto Rican background, they were both acting and singing double threats, and they frequently appeared together onstage, even announcing Lopez’s pregnancy together at a live performance featuring both stars. Then, of course, they had the children, twins Emme and Max, now 4.
Anthony has asked for a joint legal and physical custody arrangement of the couple’s kids, and he also asked the judge to dismiss any spousal support Lopez might ask for – though given her enormous financial success, that should not be an issue.
Anthony and Lopez married in 2004, and they remained together until July of last year, when they announced a separation. At the time, many friends and fans were shocked by the announcement and had hoped that they would reconcile.
However, Lopez’s quick rebound relationship with Casper Smart, 24, seemed to make that a remote possibility by the fall. Paparazzi soon were taking snapshots of the pair hugging, kissing, snuggling and hanging out at the world’s famed beaches with Emme and Max in tow. One photo captured the twins playing with Smart like with a dad, prompting Anthony to criticize his estranged wife for being unable to choose an adequate partner – and for being unable to be without one. He had also threatened to walk off their joint Latin American venture Q’Viva, but has regained his composure since then.
Lopez gave her side of the story in an August 2011 interview in Vanity Fair. She attributed the failure of the marriage to the strains placed on it after she returned to work when the twins turned three. Before then, Lopez was a stay-at-home-mom who virtually disappeared from public view. Lopez said that sometimes women have to look at what men are doing and if a woman’s partner is not doing what is best for him, then she has to make the decision to leave. Lopez also said that ending her marriage was the toughest decision she's ever had to make.
"I really wanted this family to work. That was my biggest dream, and I worked hard at it. We both did. Sometimes it doesn't work -- and that's sad. But I remain an eternal optimist about love. I believe in love...It's still my biggest dream," she said during the interview.
Not to be outdone in the rebound young lovers department, Anthony is now dating a 24-year-old Venezuelan, model Shannon De Lima. He said that despite the surprise everyone was expressing at their separation, the split was not shocking to the pair.
"I'll tell you that it wasn't something sensationalistic happening," Anthony said during an interview with ABC’s John Quinones. "It was a realization on both our parts. So, you know, it wasn't shocking. These things happen," he said. "It was a decision that we made jointly."
