The incident happened at a McDonald's in Simpsonville, South Carolina, last Saturday. Deputies in Greenville County said a mother and her daughter ordered sweet tea from the McDonald’s. According to the report, the customers noticed the tea was not sweet, but even after returning the drinks, they felt the order was not correct.
Rather than trying yet again, the mother and daughter returned home to sweeten it there. It was after removing the lids to the teas that they discovered a large amount of phlegm on top of the drinks.
Washington Jr., 19, was arrested and charged with unlawful and malicious tampering with food. The arrest warrant stated that Washington was seen, on video, leaning his face down to the drinks before filling them with tea.
John Kennedy, the franchisee / owner / operator of the McDonald's in question, released a statement. In it, he said,
"Nothing is more important to me than the safety and wellbeing of my customers. I want to assure my customers that my restaurant has the most stringent food safety and quality standards and I caution anyone from reaching a conclusion without the facts.
“As this is a pending police matter, it would be inappropriate to discuss further and, as such, any additional questions can be directed to the police department."
Washington is in the Greenville County Detention Center, on a $5,000 bond.
