The first trailer for the rebooted "Spider-Man" movie due out later this year has been posted to the Internet, and with it, arachnid fans worldwide can get their first good glimpse of Andrew Garfield as he takes the reins from Tobey MaGuire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man.
The trailer opens with Peter Parker swinging his way around the city. He ends up on love interest Gwen Stacy's (Emma Stone) fire escape. Cut to Gwen Stacy asking a now civilian-garbed Parker, "How'd you get out there?" He answers, "Climbed" (although he really "swung"). She replies, "It's 20 stories." "Your doorman's intimidating," he answers.
Later, there's a scene of Parker sitting down to dinner with the Stacy family, which is ironic, because Gwen's father, George Stacy, is in the NYPD and has a poor opinion of Spider-Man. Stacy, played in the reboot by Denis Leary, says, "This guy wears a mask, like an outlaw."
Peter then tries to defend his alter-ego, saying "I think he's trying to do something maybe the police can't." That doesn't sit well with Stacy, who replies "Can't?" in an obviously upset manner. The scene at the dinner table takes on an uncomfortable mood. Later in the trailer, Stacy is shown issuing an arrest warrent "for the masked vigilante known as Spider-Man."
[In the Marvel Comics Universe, rather than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, George Stacy is retired, and is a strong supporter of Spider-Man. He eventually dies during a fight between Spider-Man and Dr. Octopus, and tells Spider-Man he has know for some time he was Peter Parker.]
The trailer shows the film delving into Peter's past, as it shows him bullied in school. Eventually, he stumbles across a briefcase which seems to hold clues to the mysterious disappearance of his parents. He finds that his father, Richard Parker, had a "relationship" with Dr. Curt Connors, played by Rhys Ifans. Connors is the primary villain of the movie, when he eventually becomes "The Lizard," a creation made by experiments in limb regeration [as in --- Connors tries to use his experiments with the way lizards can regenerate things like their tails to restore his own arm].
Parker eventually helps Connors solve a problem. It's apparent the formula is the key to the regeneration serum, as later --- after The Lizard is born --- we see Parker telling Gwen Stacy that "I've got to stop him because I created him.'
The trailer also promises to tell us the "Untold Story" of Peter Parker. Connors tells him, "If you want the truth, Peter ... come and get it."
"The Amazing Spider-Man" reboots the series, with Andrew Garfield playing Peter Parker / Spider-Man, and Emma Stone playing Gwen Stacy, which means the movie will use the Gwen Stacy / Peter Parker love match, rather than the Mary Jane Watson one shown in the prior movie series.
The "Amazing Spider-Man" releases to theaters on July 3.
