NFL QB Chris Simms arrested for DUI

Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms has been arrested in New York City for DUI. According to police, it wasn't alcohol, however, but rather drugs.

Chris Simms, 29, is the son of CBS Sports analyst Phil Simms, a former NFL QB himself. Phil Simms led the New York Giants to a 39-20 victory over the Broncos in Super Bowl XXI.

Chris Simms appeared to have been smoking marijuana, according to police, who stopped him in Manhattan at about 1:30 AM Thursday morning. They said his eyes were red and his speech slurred.

Reportedly, however, what police really said was that Chris Simms told them he'd been smoking marijuana prior to the traffic stop. Meanwhile, Simms' story is that he was just talking about cigarettes.

While looking at this in a common sense manner, some might ask why Chris Simms would even bring up plan old cigarettes, that is indeed what he says, and he's sticking by it. Simms said the case was "very weak" after leaving a Manhattan courthouse following his arraignment on charges of driving while impaired by drugs.

Simms' lawyer, Nathan Semmel, said the quarterback didn't admit to smoking marijuana, and wouldn't have done it anyway, with his pregnant wife along for the ride. "My client never admitted to smoking marijuana that night. He admitted to smoking cigarettes that night."

Chris Simms played for the Denver Broncos in 2009. He is currently in his second stint with the Titans. He first played for Tennessee in 2008 after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then returned to the Titans in the off-season.
