A new controversial law has gone into effect in Poland. The law, passed last September would force pedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years to undergo chemical therapy, also known as "chemical castration," after their release from prison.
Those convicted of similar acts with a "close relative" would face the same chemical therapy. Chemical castration is a misnomer, as unlike actual surgery, it does not physically castrate the offender. When used by men, these drugs can reduce sex drive, as well compulsive sexual fantasies and capacity for sexual arousal.
In addition to this new, post-prison sentence addition to their laws, Poland also increased prison terms for incest or the rape of a minor. Previously, the sentencig range was from two to 12 years. The new sentencing guidelines are from three to 15 years.
It is possible, under the wording of the new law, that psychological therapy rather than chemical therapy can be used. According to the law, the offender "can be obliged by a court ruling to undergo pharmaceutical and psychological therapy in order to reduce sex drive."
The drive to enact this law first began in 2008. At that time, Poland was shocked to learn that a 45-year-old man had held his 21-year-old daughter captive for six years and fathered her two children.
