Powerball jackpot rises to $70M, Wed. Feb. 22, 2012 winning numbers

There were no Powerball jackpot winners in the multi-jurisdictional lottery's Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 drawing, but with the new rules since Jan. 15, there were still millionaires made: three of them, in fact.

There was one multi-millionaire newly minted after Wednesday, as well. Two winners took home the second place prize of $1 million, while one opted for the Power Play option and took home $2 million.

The Wednesday, Feb. 22 numbers in the Powerball lottery were 7-16-17-39-51 with a Powerball of 32. The estimated jackpot was $60 million for the annuity payout with a cash value of $37.1 million. With no winners, the jackpot rises to an estimated $70 million (annuity) and $43.3 million for cash.

Powerball's annuity option is paid over 30 years; winners may choose cash instead. The difference between the amounts is generated by accumulated interest from the unpaid winnings as the 30 years passes.

There were three new millionaires made, in the second ranked $1 million prize tier. One of them chose the Power Play option which doubled his winnings to $2 million. Those winners were 1 from Arizona, 1 from Illinois, and 1 from South Carolina (with the Power Play).

Power Play is an optional addition $1 entry fee that means that if you win, your winnings are multiplied. Prior to the Jan. 15, 2012 changes, that multiplier was random from drawing to drawing, but the multiplier values are now constant (see table below).
