One of the more memorable characters from "Seinfeld," the "Soup Nazi" (played by Larry Thomas), reunites with Jerry Seinfeld for the 2012 Acura Super Bowl ad, which was released in extended form online earlier this week.
The new Super Bowl ad shows Jerry Seinfeld visiting a car dealer, in an attempt to become the person to buy the new Acura NSX, a hybrid vehicle that is set to be sold globally, but not until 2015. The 57-year-old comedian / actor tried to convince another customer, who is already ahead of him, from purchasing the NSX.
Seinfeld tries various bribes, inclluding cash "the last living Munchkin" (played by Michael J. Anderson), and the Soup Nazi.
Michael J. Anderson, by the way, is a 58-year-old actor and dwarf that you may recall from earlier roles. He appeared in the 1990s supernatural mystery series "Twin Peaks" and in "Peaks" creator David Lynch's 2001 film "Mulholland Dr."
The Soup Nazi is based on a real person, New York City's "The Original SoupMan" Al Yeganeh. "The Original Soupman's" first location re-opened in mid-2010. In 2004 Al Yeganeh closed the 100 square foot (9 square metre) stall on 55th street when he sold the rights to his business.
In "Seinfeld," the "Soup Nazi" operates a soup eatery which enforces strict rules about ordering. If a customer does not follow them, the Soup Nazi orders him to leave the line, saying: "No soup for you!" The episode, which aired in 1995, earned Thomas an Emmy nomination.
In the episode, Jerry is careful to warn his friend Elaine of the rules. He said, "As you walk in the place, move immediately to your right. The main thing is to keep the line moving. It's very important not to embellish on your order. No extraneous comments. No questions. No compliments."
Naturally, George, who botches just about everything in the series, botches his attempt to get soup when he notes that he did not receive any bread.
Check out the Acura NSX ad, featuring the Soup Nazi, Jerry Seinfeld, Michael J. Anderson and Jay Leno. This is an extended version; the television version will be cut down somewhat.
