Tsunami Warning After 2 Strong Papua New Guinea Quakes

Two strong earthquakes struck on Sunday, off the coast of Papua New Guinea in the SW Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Geological Survey has reported. The two quakes had preliminary magnitudes of 6.9 and 6.8, respectively.

The first earthquake occurred at a depth of 57 kilometers (35 miles), the USGS said, It struck at 13:04:13 UTC, with the epicenter about 114 kilometers (71 miles) from the city of Kandrian, Papau New Guinea.

The second earthquake struck at 13:35:01 UTC, close to the first one. It was 107 kilometers (67 miles) from Kandrian,

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. A tsunami warning was issued for Indonesia as a result of the quakes, the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency reported.

On July 17, 1998, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea. In that case, the quake caused a large undersea landslide. That in turn caused a tsunami that hit the coast, killing more than 2200 people.
