Sedaris: “I’m puzzled by Eva Mendes”

Fresh off a huge ratings hit for Nickelodeon cable film “The Gym Teacher,” Sedaris ponders "The Women" star's unique sexual claims.

Actress Amy Sedaris, fresh off of a huge ratings hit for Nickelodeon cable film “The Gym Teacher,” which broke ratings records for its time slot in its premiere last Friday, says she is “puzzled” by stories she has read about actress Eva Mendes recently in which Mendes claims she has “had sex in all 50 states.”

Starring Sedaris, Nathan Cress, Chris Meloni and David Alan Greir, Nickolodeon’s “Gym Teacher” vaulted its way into broadcast and cable television's highest-rated spot this past weekend with kids 2-11, drawing 2.8 million viewers in its Friday, Sept. 12, 8 p.m. (ET/PT) premiere – a 64% increase in kids viewership from the previous year’s like time period.

The perky Sedaris brought up the unusual claims by Eva Mendes at a Nickelodeon party on Friday following the film’s premiere. “My first thought when I heard that was ouch,” Sedaris reportedly said, “followed by the thought, ‘How would this ever come up in a real conversation?” (Mendes has just launched a new home décor line through Macy’s that premieres with a five-bed accessory package this fall.)

According to statements made by Sedaris in an interview with Ray Ellin of Paltalk that has been viewed widely on Youtube, Sedaris herself has “been celibate” for the past five years.

In regards to Eva Mendes’ claims, Sedaris speculates Mendes must have been playing something like “the license plate game.”

“When we were kids on a road trip, our parents tried to get us to spot license plates from every state, and make a list -- just to shut us up,” says Sedaris. “I guess Eva’s parents must have been a bit more liberal.”

The Nickelodeon original TV comedy stars Christopher Meloni as underdog Dave Stewie, a humiliated former gymnastics gold medal contender-turned gym teacher who gets a shot at redemption as he vies for the coveted Gym Teacher of the Year Award. But with klutzy Roland Waffle (Nathan Kress of Nickelodeon's iCarly) new to his team, Stewie's no shoo-in, and the coach and the gym-averse kid get mutual makeovers in their bid to be winners. Amy Sedaris also stars as the slightly bonkers principal of Hamm Lake Middle School, and David Alan Grier co-stars as the prep school coach who is dedicated to proving Stewie a failure. Former Olympian Bruce Jenner also makes a cameo appearance.
