Anywhere Jews are writing songs for Christmas, that’s a place I want to be,” says the Divine Miss M - whose own new album from Rhino debuts Sept. 23rd.
Grammy and Emmy-award winning Bette Midler has told friends she “wants in” on talk show host Stephen Colbert’s upcoming Comedy Central Christmas special.
“Anywhere Jews are writing songs for Christmas, that’s a place I want to be,” Midler has reportedly said.
Colbert announced today that Comedy Central would be airing a Christmas show called “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All” on Nov. 23rd featuring performances by Elvis Costello, Feist, Toby Keith, John Legend and Willie Nelson. On Nov. 25, a DVD of the show will be available in stores.
The Colbert Christmas special features a story line in which Colbert and some of his "musical friends" are snowed in at Colbert’s upstate New York cabin -- and while waiting to be plowed out, sing a few special tunes to pass the time.
“Perhaps I can arrive driving the snowplow that rescues them,” suggests Midler, “singing ‘Snowplow Beneath Your Wings.’”
Admits Bette: “I’m a party crasher, I know. And I have no shame about it.”
Meanwhile, whether Midler boards the Colbert Express or not, her fans can get ready to enjoy 19 of her career with the release of ‘Jackpot – The Best of Bette’ on Sept. 23rd from Rhino Records.
The album will span Midler’s entire career and feature some of her biggest hits mixed with and unreleased demo.
The 19-song retrospective paints a vibrant portrait of Midler's uncanny ability to inhabit any style of music and make it her own. Taken from nine studio albums, this eclectic selection touches on girl group ("Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"), Top 40 ("Friends"), soul ("When A Man Loves A Woman"), standards ("This Ole House"), holiday ("Cool Yule") and rock ("Beast Of Burden").
‘Jackpot’ also spotlights two of Midler's most important musical milestones. The first is "Wind Beneath My Wings," her first #1 hit and winner of the 1989 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The second is "From A Distance," winner of the 1990 Grammy for Song of the Year and a #2 hit for Midler from her platinum-certified album Some People's Lives.
Alongside the familiar melodies on ‘Jackpot’ is "Something Your Heart Has Been Telling Me," an unreleased demo Midler recorded in the summer of 1984 with renowned songwriters Robert Kraft and Barry Reynolds.
During her career, Midler has won four Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, three Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award, and has been nominated for two Academy Awards.
