Report: Moore phone fling dinged Lucas, not English

But actress Tina Fey says it was really Deepak.

Although London’s “Sun” tabloid newspaper reported yesterday that a Sprint cellphone thrown by television legend Mary Tyler Moore accidentally smacked celebrity chef Todd English in the head before ricocheting into Target decoupagist John Derian’s eye at a recent pre-Emmy charity event in Los Angeles, it looks like actor Josh Lucas was actually the recipient of Moore’s cellphone rage -- and not English.

English issued a statement earlier today saying he received no damaging cellphone blow from Moore. Meanwhile, actress Kristin Chenoweth, 38, star of the smash ABC hit “Pushing Daisies,” has told a leading online entertainment website that the victim was actually actor Josh Lucas, a popular Arkansas-born actor best known for his roles in the films Glory Road, A Beautiful Mind, Hulk and Poseidon.

“I was the one who picked Mary’s cellphone out of the hors d’oeuvres to give it back to her, so I’m pretty sure I have my facts straight,” says the sparkly blond “Pushing Daisies” star. “I was pretty awed to even be talking to her. She was really apologetic.”

But Tina Fey, also in attendance at the party, claims the phone-assault victim looked to her to be new age guru Deepak Chopra. “And I would never joke about something like this,” says Fey, who picked up an Emmy for comedy the following night.

Partygoers had heard Moore arguing on her cellphone with someone she identified only as “Bernie” about a “favor bank” the two share that Moore felt was becoming “too one-sided.”

Intimates of Moore speculated that the person she was talking to in such an apparently angry fashion was either her friend Bernadette Peters, the two-time Tony winner with whom she created the Broadway Barks pet adoption charity, or possibly Dr. Bernie Silverman, chairman of urology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the hospital where her cardiologist husband Dr. Robert Levine practices.

Sources say the phone was a Sprint HTC Touch Diamond model, just released in September. That model has a TouchFLO 3D User Interface, EV-DO Rev. A and Wi-Fi, full HTML Opera browser, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1, 3.2MP camera, 4GB Internal memory, and stereo Bluetooth technology. It supports POP3, IMAP, and PictureMail. Sprint describes TouchFLO(TM) 3D as “a dynamic touch-screen experience that puts live television, weather, email, photos, contacts, music and more at your fingertips.”

Original reports said the phone ricocheted to give Target’s head decoupagist, Derian, a minor eye injury. Moore’s rep says she intends to give the offending phone “to an Ebay auction for charity.”

Lucas gained mainstream exposure after his roles in Sweet Home Alabama, A Beautiful Mind, and as Glenn Talbot in Hulk. He can be seen next in Boaz Yakin’s “Death in Love” and will shortly begin production on “Management,” a biting take on the romantic comedy genre about a socially awkward man who falls hopelessly in love with an attractive but friendless woman, to be played by Jennifer Aniston. In the film, Lucas plays a former porn star who must give love advice to a socially awkward man.

Additionally, Lucas will begin production on “6 Bullets from Now,” opposite Tim Roth, a true story of five gunmen who stole more than $1 million in cash and jewels from New York’s Pierre Hotel on New Year’s Day in 1972 — the largest hotel heist in history.
