NEW YORK, NY (SEPT. 27, 2008) Janet Flippersen-Hatseat gave a talk at the Manhattan Public Library's Riverside Branch today in the Community Conference Room that got a lot of people hot.
"What I do," said Flippersen-Hatseat, who is a motivational speaker for companies such as GE, Mazda and Gallo as well as for the public, "is some roleplay in which I am the coach and each of the audience members is a team member. And before I'm through, they feel they can do more than they ever thought they could."
Flippersen-Hatseat says she relies a lot on motivational phrases that originated with famous Ohio State football coach Lou Holtz.
Her favorites are these:
+++
“Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”
+++
“It's not the load that breaks you down - its the way you carry it.”
+++
"Don't tell your problems to people: eighty percent don't care; and the other twenty percent are glad you have them”
+++
“The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely the one who dropped it.”
+++
“It is a fine thing to have ability, but the ability to discover ability in others is the true test.”
+++
“Motivation is simple. You eliminate those who are not motivated.”
+++
And Flippersen-Hatseat says she also finds the sayings of the Greek Stoic Epictetus, a favorite of actors such as Jim Carrey, Bernadette Peters, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mary Tyler Moore and Amy Sedaris, can be effective in motivating her audience as well.
Her favorite? “If you hear that someone is speaking ill of you, instead of trying to defend yourself you should say: 'He obviously does not know me very well, since there are so many other faults he could have mentioned,'" she says with a laugh.
