Entertainer Bonnie Hunt, who just launched a new daytime talk show on ABC in partnership with Warner Brothers, has let slip the fact that her producers are putting together an upcoming show that would bring actress and New York Times best-selling author Tori Spellling and her mother, Los Angeles civic leader Candy Spelling, together for the first time to talk publicly about their allegedly brutal public feud and their recent familial reconciliation.
“The story of the feud between Candy and Tori Spelling is one that has never been fully told or explained,” Hunt tells sources. “Was there really a feud? If so, why did it happen? And has it truly come to an end?”
Says Hunt: “What better place to finally lay those ugly rumors to rest, than right here on ABC, a network that throughout its history has owed so much to the generosity and creativity of the Spelling family.”
Candy, 54, has two grandchildren through Tori -- Liam and Stella. “But whether they will also appear on the show has yet to be determined,” says Hunt, who says she expects the show to air “on Thanksgiving Day or thereabouts.”
Hunt, who played a talk-show host on “Life With Bonnie,” became one for real last week when “The Bonnie Hunt Show” debuted with actor Robin Williams as one of her first guests. Mixing moments of understandable awkwardness with refreshing warmth and effortless irreverence, Hunt looks to have found a natural niche for her self-effacing gift of gab.
Demographically, Hunt’s new show is already the most highly watched show in its time slot in two American cities: Cleveland and Seattle, with a 1.8/8 and a 2.7/12 rating respectively. The show earned a 1.0/3 in day two, and with a two-day average is improving in its target demographic of women age 25-54 demographic, rating a 0.5/4 to hold even with its lead-in and up 25% in year-to-year comparisons.
Long considered one of Hollywood's unassuming treasures and one of David Letterman's favorite guests, Hunt has a homespun Midwest style you can't help but adore.
Carol Gene “Candy” Spelling is the widow of famed television executive Aaron Spelling, who produced the decades long hits “Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island” for ABC, among his other hits. As of 2007, Spelling holds the record for most prolific television producer, with 218 producer and executive producer credits. Candy is a well-known Los Angeles civic leader and philanthropist and a regular columnist for The Huffington Post.
Her daughter Tori skyrocketed to fame as part of the cast of Spelling’s “Beverly Hills 90210” and went on to star in a number of cable-based reality television shows. Most recently she authored a book called “STori Telling,” which was No. 1 on this week’s New York Times best-sellers list.
According to press reports, the bitter and highly publicized Candy-Tori feud began in earnest when Candy 86'd Tori's TV project to honor her dad after he died in June of 2006. And although Candy dropped a cool million when the Spellings threw Tori's first wedding reception, Tori told friends she felt her mom had “cheaped it out.”
Tori later told US Magazine that at the time of her father’s death in 2006, she felt "betrayed" and feels that she was not told how sick her father really was. She reportedly blames her mother for not being able to say good-bye to her father. For her part, Candy was reportedly less than thrilled about how Tori poked fun at her mother on her show “So NoTORIous.”
“We hear they’re back together, but we really don’t know for sure,” says Hunt. “Am I stepping on Barbara Walters territory with this investigation? I don’t know. But what I do know is this: It’s time, finally, to lay all of these bitter rumors to rest.”
