Super Paper Mario is one of those special games that honours the past whilst innovating. Play the game for even a few minutes and you’ll see how classic Super Mario Bros. games influenced the game mechanics of Super Paper Mario for Wii in a big way.
Although Super Paper Mario takes you to a new dimension, letting you play the game in both 2D and 3D, the core gameplay will feel instantly familiar if you’ve played Super Mario Bros. Similar to that NES classic, Super Paper Mario demands that you make Mario jump, punch blocks, stomp on Koopas and Goombas and collect coins.
But once you progress through the game, you’ll notice a similarity to another NES classic: Super Mario Bros. 2. What made that game unique was that it gave you a chance to choose which character you wanted to play as on a given level - be it Mario, Luigi, Peach or Toad. Each character had a unique attribute, and one character would give you a better chance at advancing through a level than the others. In Super Paper Mario, you also get to choose which character you want to play as, and you switch between them on the fly.
Although Mario is the game’s main man, advancing through the game will earn you the chance to play as Luigi, Peach and Bowser as well. Just like in Super Mario Bros. 2, each character lends a special skill to the quest. Mario, for instance, is the only character that can flip into the third dimension. Peach’s parasol lets her float in the air when she jumps, giving her some extra distance and providing cover when she’s under attack. Bowser uses his fire-breathing to burn enemies and his girth to inflict heavy damage, while Luigi can jump freakishly high! -Nintendo
