Pirelli expands its tunable portfolio to address applications in the Japanese and LATAM markets

Milan, 4 September 2007 - Pirelli Broadband Solutions, the broadband access and photonics company within the Pirelli Group, today announced that it is adding full L-band coverage (40 nm/100 channels) to its tunable offerings which includes Pirelli’s DTL Tunable Laser, ITLA and 300-PIN MSA Transponders. All products will be on display at the ECOC exhibition and conference, taking place in Berlin, 16-20 September 2007.

With an enhanced tunable offering for next-generation WDM networks, Pirelli’s solutions are now suitable for metro networks in new markets such as Japan and countries in Latin America. All L-band solutions deliver the same functionality as their C-band counterparts: built-in reliability, simplified network configurations and reduced systems costs.

“Adding L-band functionality to our tunable product offering is the logical next step in anticipating customer demands and addressing new markets, like Japan and Brazil,” said Daniele Fadini, senior vice president, of Sales for Optical Components & Modules, for Pirelli Broadband Solutions. “Reducing inventory, number of lambdas, providing one interface for all wavelengths, and offering flexibility in the optical layer are now achievable benefits for network operators using the L-band spectrum.”

At the core of the tunable portfolio is Pirelli’s Dynamically Tunable Laser: Telcordia GR-468-CORE qualified and hermetically sealed in a 26-pin butterfly package, providing increased reliability, a smaller footprint and a significant reduction in optical network costs. The Pirelli Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly (ITLA) allows telecoms operators to integrate tunability into their networks while reducing development costs and time to market. For further integration, Pirelli’s 300-PIN MSA transponders, available in multiple optical interfaces (NRZ, negative-chirp NRZ and Duobinary formats), extend the reach of metro networks to 350+ Km.
