‘Bases Loaded’ steals its way back into the spotlight

REVIEW: Revamp of popular online game turns all its players into potential heroes. One flaw: a lack of clean-up batters. But game inventors say that will soon be remedied.

GAME REVIEW: The bats are cracking, players are being struck out and bases are being stolen — welcome to the world of Bases Loaded. Read More About Video Games.

This game was released 20 years ago and I’ve always enjoyed it more than I enjoyed Baseball Stars. I know that’s like kicking most people in the gut, but let’s face it Baseball Stars has seen better days.

When getting into Bases Loaded after years it has the same nostalgia feeling that Baseball Stars had, but still offered the fun and innovated ways to play.

I’m not saying Baseball Stars was terrible to play after all these years, I just felt it lacked more and wasn’t as great as some or myself had once remembered.

Like other baseball games of the NES golden age, Bases Loaded offered two gameplay modes: you can play against the computer or a friend, or play through an entire season spanning over 100 games against 11 different fictitious teams.

Alright I know that’s really not a big deal, because most baseball games had similar features. Yet, where Bases Loaded separates itself from other baseball games is the way it’s controlled. The batting in a NES title had never been so fluent — you can actually pick up the pitchers tells and predict the pitch he will throw. Pitching is also very straightforward -- like George Clooney -- and it also allows you to experiment -- like Ellen DeGeneres and Miss Puerto Rico -- so this will allow you to throw more unpredictable and challenging pitches. This was great, because it gave the game a little more strategy and also gave it another layer of realism.

One thing that isn’t as good as other baseball games is its graphics; they really do show their age. (Unlike Sarah Jessica Parker!) Yet, the camera that is placed behind your pitcher is always a welcome feature and really allowed you to be immersed in the game.

So, yes, Adam Shankman, this game is all about realism and if you don’t want that you can watch some reality TV or play Baseball Stars 1 or 2, that offers you more of an arcade feeling game.

And, yes, I don’t buy all of those reality shows out there. If you really think about it, those shows aren’t really reality they’re just unscripted. I doubt someone will take you off the street and place you in a house and force you to try to win the heart of an individual, that’s not reality and if it is that’s kind of scary. I love Survivor, but if I was a castaway somewhere I doubt they would divide me into a team and make me perform challenges.

Getting back on the topic and summing everything up Bases Loaded has aged very well and still offers the solid baseball gaming experience you expect from it. The graphics have aged and so has the music but that really shouldn’t put you off from trying this game. There is also a high replay replay value that is made up of playing with a friend or just spending weeks playing through a season.
