At dawn, scores of Kolkattans took out a candlelight procession to remember the Mother, whose work for the poor and dying earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Nuns of Missionaries of Charity (MoC) in their trade mark white saris with a blue border held special prayers at the Mother House, the headquarters of the order set up by the Albanian nun, and her grave.
MoC's Superior General Sister Nirmala lit a candle on the tomb which was decorated with flowers.
An all faiths prayer was also held.
Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003, six years after her death, following claims by a woman who said she was cured of cancer by the nun.
The Vatican must authenticate a second miracle for her to be declared a saint.
"We are waiting for a second miracle for sainthood of the Mother. I am very happy and feel deep gratitude on the 10th death anniversary of the Mother," said Sister Nirmala, Mother Teresa's successor.
"She had faith in God irrespective of all religions. Let us ask Mother to pray for us," Sister Nirmala said.
Visitors to Mother House also spent time at a museum displaying Mother Teresa's sparse belongings -- a low wooden stool, a plain writing table, a wheelchair she used during last days, her sari neatly darned in places along with a pin used to secure it and her leather sandals. - DDNEWS
