The bibliography includes the list of all materials used. The said list includes books, journals or periodicals, articles, speeches, pamphlets, lectures or discussions, interviews or dialogues, film, documentaries, the internet, and other electronic sources such as the CD-ROM.
Writing term papers usually follow a process. First, the student chooses a topic. He or she proceeds with researching possible materials. After gathering all the necessary materials, the student may proceed with writing the term paper and providing statements based on the explored information. The student’s task is to provide evaluation and creative analyses for the topic through writing. The bulk comes from writing the body itself. He or she will then create final revisions. The last part in completing the paper is the enlistment of all gathered resources which is the bibliography.
Writing the last part does not mean that the bibliography has the least importance. In reality, the bibliography gives significant help not only for the current author of the term paper but for future researchers as well. Below are some points to consider as to how valuable the bibliography is as part of term papers:
1. Serves as a record
The bibliography serves as a record of all looked up resource materials alphabetized and arranged according to type. On the student’s point of view, this serves as a checklist as to how much resources he or she was able to find in order to produce a quality term paper. For the professor, the bibliography will allow him or her to easily check the authenticity of the materials. This will also determine if a student has created fabricated data.
2. Serves as Citation
Professors prefer their students to include citations in their works, especially if the students quote words and works of one or several authors. Furthermore, actual citation or including footnotes on term papers refrain the student from plagiarizing.
3. Serves as a Future Reference
Having an organized bibliography will help future students research on a similar topic. If a term paper has systematic bibliographic reference, students will be able to include the author’s paper as one of the potential cited works in the future.
A student may include much creativity and exemplary writing techniques, but a professor can immediately define one’s resourcefulness through the number of significant references a student has provided. Keep in mind that the bibliography is as much vital as the discussion in the term paper and that it serves as a record, a citation, and a future reference for forthcoming studies.
Nice article, miaa.
Nice article, miaa. Citations are a big pain to write though. Do you have recommendations of tools to write your citations?
For Mac Users, I suggest Papers for its iTunes like interface.
For Windows users, I suggest Wizfolio. It's very simple to use and it also allows you to collect patents and youtubes as well.
Would love to hear your views.
